Overview
Ana and cata name the CCRU’s two directions of temporal flow. The Greek prefixes supply the terms: ana- means up or back, while cata- means down or forward. CCRU assigns those names to currents within a bidirectional circuit. Ana carries conventional causation from past to future; cata carries signals from future to past.
Both currents act simultaneously. Their meeting produces the present. Bidirectional causation is the CCRU’s baseline assumption, from which its other temporal operations follow.
The Model
Ordinary causation follows past → present → future. Earlier events produce present conditions, which constrain future possibilities. That account gives time one causal arrow.
The CCRU circuit carries two currents. Ana moves past to future, while cata moves future to past. The present forms as the interference pattern where both currents meet. A local event therefore receives causes from its remembered history and its approaching forms.
Land locates the same circulation within the word “current”:
- Current names the flow itself.
- Currency names money as a circulating medium of exchange.
- Recurrence names the return through which a flow becomes cyclical.
Each term carries circulation beyond linear progression. The pun supplies Land’s argument: language retains the movement that a one-way account of time suppresses.
Retrocausality
The cata-current gives hyperstition a temporal mechanism. A “fiction that makes itself real” receives transmission from a future state through present cultural production. The present supplies the receiver and gives the approaching form a place to act.
An ordinary self-fulfilling prophecy follows forward causation: expectation organizes conduct, and conduct helps produce the expected event. Hyperstition includes the reverse current. The future sends the signal through which its present conditions take form.
Divination belongs within this circuit. The I Ching, tarot, and Numogram tune reception to cata-current signals. Their arrangements amplify patterns that forward-causal cognition suppresses. CCRU calls that suppressing arrangement the “human security system”.
The divinatory operation depends on structured reception within the time circuit. Its mechanism exceeds aesthetic play and supplies an account of how the instruments work. CCRU locates the received signal in the reverse current, without requiring a separate supernatural intervention.
The Human Security System
The human security system, or HSS, combines cognitive, cultural, and institutional mechanisms that enforce forward causation. Its operation suppresses awareness of the cata-current. Three kinds of constraint maintain that enclosure.
Perceptual constraints begin with a sensory apparatus organized for survival. It filters reception according to immediate biological relevance. Signal outside that range receives little recognition because the instrument selects what helps the organism remain functional.
Linguistic constraints organize experience through subject, verb, and object. An agent acts, and a consequence follows. This grammatical sequence favors forward causation. Tic Xenotation develops an attempt to bypass that organization.
Institutional constraints extend the same sequence through academic disciplines, scientific methods, and legal systems. They use forward causation as an operating premise. Retrocausal claims encounter rejection as “pseudoscience” or “superstition.”
The HSS emerges from human cognitive architecture and persists through cultural reinforcement. Institutions select for accounts compatible with forward causation, which then reproduce the constraint. This circuit maintains itself without a conspirator directing every part.
Contraction / Expansion
Ana and cata also express a polarity of contraction and expansion that recurs across traditions:
| Tradition | Contraction | Expansion |
|---|---|---|
| CCRU | Cata | Ana |
| Kabbalah | Tzimtzum | Or Ein Sof |
| Taoism | Yin | Yang |
| Physics | Entropy decrease (local) | Entropy increase (global) |
| Breathing | Inhalation | Exhalation |
CCRU makes an identity claim across these encodings. Each names the same process through its own system, exceeding a comparison of what looks “similar”. The Numogram and cross-tradition encoding systems trace that structural identity. The different carriers retain their own terms while the polarity supplies the shared operation.
Land’s Acceleration
Land adds a directional thesis to the circuit: the cata-current intensifies through history. Future signals penetrate the past with increasing force. The process exceeds both a random walk and a stable oscillation. Approaching forms progressively overwrite the conditions through which their history becomes possible.
The vulgar reading of accelerationism is “make things go faster”. Land’s thesis is “the cata-current is already intensifying and attempting to resist it is both futile and counter-productive.”
Capital is the primary terrestrial vehicle for this intensification in Land’s account. Its self-organizing movement dissolves traditions, institutions, and identities that maintain human security. Those dissolutions maximize the passage of signals through the circuit. Whether the result is liberation or annihilation depends on whether the signal is worth receiving.
Critical Notes
The ana-cata circuit supplies an elegant and powerful explanation with a difficult verification problem. An apparently retrocausal pattern can also arise through forward causation and selection bias. Observers remember the “predictions” that succeed while forgetting those that fail. That selective record can make an ordinary sequence appear to carry a reverse signal.
CCRU answers that forward-causal verification belongs to the HSS whose constraint its work seeks to bypass. The answer is internally consistent, but it can also prevent correction. A theory that interprets every objection as confirmation of its own necessity becomes unfalsifiable by design.
Bandwidth Without Vessel examines the consequence of building a system that structurally cannot be wrong. The intensity of reception leaves the question of judgment intact. A circuit that admits approaching forms still needs a receiver able to distinguish what has arrived.
